Transcript for "Blackbaud and Turnitin Even Better Together": Hello, everybody. Thank you for joining us today. We're very excited to sit down and chat with you concerning the new updated BlockBot and Turnitin integration. Now this particular integration will be leveraging LTI 1.3 framework. We'll talk a little bit more about that in just a little bit. First, to kick things off, I just have a little bit of housekeeping to chat through. This webinar audio will be broadcasted through your computer speakers. So hopefully, you all can hear me. If you need captions, you can hover over the stage and click the CC button on the bottom right of the screen to turn captions on or off. If for whatever reason you encounter any audio or technical issues, such as slide freezing, or if you can no longer hear me, for example, it's best to refresh your browser. That will oftentimes, fix the issue that you're hitting. Otherwise, if you need to, try leaving the option. It should allow your instance to refresh. If you would like to submit a question during this experience, please click on the q and a on the top right to submit any questions you may have. When you're submitting your questions, make sure that it's as specific as humanly possible and tag either myself or Stephanie, if your question pertains to something specific. Next to q and a, you should also see a resources button. Clicking on that should give you access to several links and resources. It may also be noted as a docs in your particular instance. You can also adjust your settings by using the cog wheel at the bottom of the event space. And finally, you can also use the tabs on the top of the event to see today's agenda and meet your speakers, so myself and Stephanie in this example. Joined with me today, we do have a representative from our sales department. His name is Nate. So he will be here to help chat through any purchase questions that you may have, or if you would like a demo of the software. Feel free to use the messaging feature in the top right hand corner to reach out to Nate and start a conversation. So thanks, Nate, for being here. Before we jump into the agenda, I just wanna really quickly iterate, Blackbaud's overall goal for the k twelve school. Our focus area is to provide a single solution vendor, to all of you, thinking all aspects of your school, from student information and learning to school accounting to tuition and financial aid. We do it all, and that all happens within a single login experience. Now before we jump into the meat and potatoes of the agenda and what we have planned today, I just also wanna let everyone know that what you are going to experience today is still a work in progress. So as such, this presentation contains forward looking statements that involve inherent risks, uncertainties, and assumptions. So, effectively, if you are looking to purchase Blackbaud software, be sure to make sure that you're taking those considerations with features and functionalities that are in general availability, and not necessarily represented within this particular presentation. Now a lot of what you're going to see is coming in the very near future, but do, again, keep in mind that this is in what we call an early adopter phase. So as far as the agenda today, we're gonna be chatting a bit about what the difference is between one point one and one point three. As you may know, we do already have an existing LTI integration with Turnitin, albeit it's on an older framework called 1.1. So we'll talk a little bit about the differences between one point one and one point three and how you can take advantage of those differences. We'll also take a look at configuring the integration. So this we'll take a look at if you are a brand new user, meaning that you have never once set up a Turnitin 1.1 integration before. We will also take a look at how to set up the new 1.3 integration in the event that you have been utilizing the 1.1 integration. We'll also take a look at the updates to the faculty and student workflows. Stephanie and myself will also chat through any upcoming enhancements both to the Turnitin experience or to the Blackbaud experience. And finally, we'll close out today with some resources so that way you all can access those and see those in real time, as well as a final question and answer session towards the very end of the conversation. We will also be stopping in between each of these sections and helping to answer any questions that do arise. We also wanted to introduce ourselves really quickly. So, for those of you that do not know me, my name is Mike Morrissette. I'm one of the product managers here at Blackbaud looking after parts of the learning management system and student information system. I'm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and I've been with Blackbaud for going on ten years. Before coming to Blackbaud, I was a high school French teacher and swim coach, so that's a little bit about me. I'm joined today by Stephanie, and I'll let her introduce herself. Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Stephanie Stocks. I'm our product manager for integrations here at Turnitin. I'm based in Laurel, Maryland, and I've been at Turnitin for eight years now. In my previous life, I was actually an entomologist, and a fun fact about me is I have a spider species named after me. Oh, that is a fun fact. I didn't know that before, Stephanie. Thank you for sharing. Alrighty. So let's talk a little bit about what's different. Right? For those of you that have an LTI 1.1 integration configured, what makes moving over to the 1.3 version of that integration worthwhile? So first, let's talk a little bit about what is even different with LTI 1.3. So if you know what LTI is, it's a way for tools such as Turnitin to connect to what are known as platforms, also known as Blackwater or other LMSs out on the market. This is a standard set of APIs. That way, a particular tool doesn't need to configure different APIs for the various LMSs that exist out in the market. Just makes it a lot easier for all of us to connect to one another and make sure that you all get the enhancements and experiences that you need for your various institutions. With LTI 1.3, Blackbaud has actually introduced two additional certifications. So we're able to leverage and sync more data than what we've done before in the past. Those two additional certifications are known as deep linking and roles and rostering. Previously, with the LTI 1.1 integration, we just had an assignments in grades certification, which allowed us to pass back and forth, graded information, from one tool to the platform. However, now we can update our workflows to make those more intuitive for the faculty at your schools and for the students at your schools. We'll take a look at those workflows in just a little bit. Additionally, as you are scheduling students, into various classes, those roster changes now also sync between tools and platforms. Now the important thing to note is that this is an update across all of our LTIs that leverage the 1.3 integration, not Turnitin specifically, but we'll take a look at what this means for Turnitin in just a little bit. So just to give you a little bit more information on each of these various certifications, deep linking, like I mentioned, does allow for a more intuitive workflow. So we'll take a look at the teacher workflow in just a bit, but that has changed significantly from the LTI 1.1 integration. And Stephanie will be going over that with all of you in just a bit. With roles and rostering, like I mentioned, as you are enrolling or dropping students, you can manage that all within Blackbaud now. Those updates will roll over and update Turnitin automatically. No longer will you have to manage those enrollments in the two separate systems. And finally, just like with the 1.1 integration, we will still be passing back and forth grade information between Turnitin and Blackbaud. Now let's take a look at what it means to configure a brand new integration. So these, steps are going to be utilized in the event that you have never configured a 1.1 integration before. So you are starting brand new from scratch. Now, thankfully, the steps that you're gonna see here are gonna be very applicable in the event that you're moving from 1.1 to 1.3. So the first thing that you'll wanna do is log in to your Turnitin database. From there, as a Turnitin, admin, you can go into your account and click on the integrations button. From there, in the dashboard, you can access LTI 1.3. This is where you'll go to actually create some various keys and secrets. That way, you can share those between Turnitin and Blackbaud. When it comes to configuring the integration within Turnitin, there are a couple more steps that we need to do. First is we need to click the get started button. After that, we'll need to select an LMS provider. And for the use case of Blackbaud, you'll use the other provider option for the time being, and then you'll need to add in a registration name. Now you can call this whatever you'd like. The registration name is entirely up to you. So you do not necessarily have to call Blackbaud if you do not wish to. Now, once that's done, you need to go into your Blackbaud solution and create a provider as well. So here, we would go into core settings integrations, LTI, and create a new provider and select the bespoke turn it in option from the provider type drop down. Now, this can only be accessible by integration managers. So you'll wanna make sure that if you are, configuring this yourself that you have the integration manager role assigned to you. Now after those two have been started, we have to take a couple of pieces of information from Turnitin and plug them into Blackbaud and vice versa. So in order for the integration to function in your Turnitin database, you're gonna take things like the tool public key set, the login initiation URL, the launch URLs, as well as the target link URL, and you're gonna copy these into your Blackbaud instance. Now, there are a couple of ways that we need to map these, and it's very important that the mapping is done appropriately. So for example, the launch URLs need to go in the launch URL section within Blackbaud. The target link URI needs to go in the target link URI field in Blackbaud. Now, in our documentation, we do have all of this mapped out very clearly, so that way you know exactly which particular fields in Turnitin need to be mapped over to Blackbaud. Now once that is done, you can save that particular instance. And within Blackbaud, you would click on the contact menu for that newly constructed connection type, and you would click view API key. Within the API key, you can take some other pieces of information that you need to take from Blackbaud and insert it into Turnitin. So things like the client ID needs to be copied out of Blackbaud and placed it into the Turnitin field here. Same with issuer, public key set, OAuth token, as well as the OAuth authorization endpoint. Now once all of that is done in both your Turnitin and Blackbaud instances, That's it. The integration will, be accessible, from the faculty workflow. But there is one little step that admin need to take, before teachers can finally start creating, assignments, and that is you as an admin need to go into Blackbaud and create a test assignment. So with this test assignment, you would impersonate a teacher. It can be with a real class or with a demo class, whatever works. We just need to launch the Turnitin LTI. So that can be accessed by going into a class page, assignments, and then selecting the add drop down and selecting the new add Turnitin provider type. Once that's done, as an admin, you'll go through a four step process where you'll need to log in to your Turnitin instance. Once that's done, however, the teachers at your school will be able to begin to utilize the integration and access the Turnitin resources. So, again, from here, you would see a screen that just asks you to select a platform. For those of you based in The US, you would select global. You would insert your admin email and password, select your Turnitin account from the drop down, and then go ahead and actually link those here. Now I see that we have a couple of questions coming in. I have one question here that says, do we lose any previous data if we create this update connection to 1.3? We'll go over that here in just a little bit. I know a lot of you are really interested in what happens when you upgrade from LTI 1.1 to 1.3. So we'll talk through some of the caveats, there in just a moment. It does we have another question that says, can the test assignment be in an old classroom that is no longer happening? The answer to that is yes. You can do that. The point of logging in as the admin is just to finalize the connection. How you go about, launching that experience, doesn't really matter. Like I mentioned, it can be through a demo class. It can also be through a real class or a class that's happened in the past. It just needs to be able to launch the integration and log in as the admin that one time, and then you're good to go. It looks like those are all the questions that we have so far. So now let's go ahead and take a look at upgrading an existing LTI 1.1 integration to LTI 1.3. Now there are a few things that I wanna note with this. When it comes to the LTI 1.1 integration, there is an end of support date, and that is currently targeted for 12/31/2026. So we will still be supporting the LTI 1.1 integration, for a little while now. Just know that that will come with an end of support time frame of 12/31/2026. So you have some time before you need to move over to the LTI 1.3 workflow. The end of life date for the LTI 1.1 integration with Turnitin is scheduled for 12/31/2027. So we will completely remove the LTI 1.1 integration from both Turnitin and Blackbaud, on 12/31/2027. So just some key dates for you all to remember. Now let's talk a little bit about the workflow changes. When it comes to rostering of students, Inbox, instructors can now submit on behalf of students. So that is an update, from the 1.1 to the 1.3. Additionally, as you saw in one of the previous, screenshots, instead of creating an assignment in the Blackbaud UX and attaching the Turnitin tool to that assignment, teachers will be able to click on the add drop down and immediately launch into the Turnitin workflow. So we'll take a look at that in just a little bit, but that is one other workflow change, that we'll be going over a little bit later on in, in this presentation. Now, a few things that I wanna note that do not change. The student submission workflow has not changed at all. How teachers are creating assignments, that piece has changed. But students at your school, whether they are using 1.1 or 1.3, will not see any change in functionality. Turnitin rubrics, quick marks, pure mark questions, etcetera, instructors will still have access to all of those tools that they've created in the past. So they're not gonna have to rebuild anything from scratch. All of that will still be present. And finally, for those of you that, have configured assignments in Blackbaud utilizing the LTI 1.1 integration, those assignments and submissions will still be accessible even after you have moved over to the 1.3, framework. So you will not lose access to any of that historical information that will still be readily available to all of you, during this time frame in between, the go live of the 1.3 framework and the end of life of the 1.1. So a solid chunk of time, before that information needs to roll over. A few other things just to note, assignment analytics, have not changed either. So that will still be accessible in the 1.3 just as it is in the 1.1. And then when you are copying assignments, that previously had used the 1.1 integration, those will copy over into the new 1.3 integration automatically. Your teachers will not need to take any action there. Now, in terms of actually configuring the integration, this is gonna be very, very similar, to if you were starting, from scratch. However, we are actually gonna start from the Blackbaud perspective, when moving from 1.1 to 1.3. So, again, as an integration manager, you'll go into core settings, integration settings, find your existing LTI 1.1 integration, click on that context menu, and then click edit. From there, once this tool is out, in general availability, you will be able to toggle between the LTI 1.1 tool or the LTI 1.3 version of this tool. In order to migrate, it's as simple as selecting the LTI 1.3 tool, and from there, you'll get a a slew of new fields that need to be updated. One of those new updates, has to do with the default assignment type. So like I mentioned, because teachers are no longer creating assignments directly from the Blackbaud UX, rather they will be creating it from the Turnitin UX, when that assignment saves, we need to give it some kind of an assignment type. So as an admin, you have the ability to select what that default assignment type item should be. Now after the assignment is created, teachers can always go in and edit and change that assignment type. So we'll take a look at that in just a little bit. But just know as an admin, you do have to select at least one default assignment type option, when configuring the LTI 1.3 version of this tool. After you've done that, there is some work that needs to be done in Turnitin. So as a Turnitin admin, you'll wanna log in, find your existing account name for the 1.1 integration that you have configured, and click on that configured button. From there, you'll wanna leave your LTI API, alone, and you'll go ahead and mark LTI 1.3. So this is gonna be, again, very, very similar to what we saw when you were creating from scratch or if you had never used the 1.1 integration before. Again, we'll go through we'll get, started with the l l t I 1.3 setup. You'll select other as your registration, and then your registration name can be whatever you would like. From here, we'll have to do the same amount of mapping that we did previously. So, again, you'll take those launch URLs, copy them from Turnitin, paste them into Blackbaud, so on and so forth. And then once all of these URLs are inserted, you would close and save out, your Blackbaud settings. Once those Blackbaud settings are saved, just like what we would need to do in, starting from scratch, we would need to click view API key and then take the client ID issuer public key set, OAuth token, and OAuth authorization out of Blackbaud and paste those into the corresponding fields within Turnitin. From there, again, admin will have to click on the add drop down. And, again, this can happen in a demo class, a real class, a class that happened in the past. It doesn't matter. We just need to authenticate as an admin a single time in the tool before our teachers will be able to access them. But clicking on the drop down, you'll be able to click add and then whatever it is that you named the integration. And then similarly, you'll want to click global, sign in, select your select or your desired account, and then actually connect the two together. And that's it as far as updating or configuring the the actual integration goes. Now I'm gonna go ahead and pass it over to Stephanie to talk through some of the updates that we've made pertaining to the faculty and student workflows. So we did have a a question, about it sounded like the assignments can no longer be set up in Blackbaud with 1.3 of the assignments that we set up with Turnitin. We'll actually go over the faculty workflow, now. So I'm going to start with that. Hopefully, everybody can see everything. And so in your course, from the plus add button, you're gonna choose to add Turnitin. Now this text can actually be different depending on the name the admin gave the tool. So for example, if you named your tool LTI 1.1, you may wanna change it. Or if you feel that would confuse your users, you don't have to change the name at all. Depending on what the Turnitin admin has set up for your account, you may see this screen. We have recently launched several new products which can be accessed in the screen, and it is possible that your school has some of these products. We'll talk more about the products the new products a little bit later. But if you see this, you will still want to choose the standard assignment classic. If you only have a single product enabled by your Turnitin admin, you actually may bypass that screen entirely and be taken here, which is the assignment creation screen. This should look exactly the same as the LTI 1.1 integration screen with all of the same fields to be filled out. You have access to your past rubrics, and the default settings you have saved previously will apply to your new LTI 1.3 assignments. And when you have filled all the fields out, you're gonna click submit. To view the assignment submissions or edit the assignments, you're gonna click on the assignment name. And if you need to make changes to the assignment, you're gonna click on the gear sign here. Those fields that are in gray, they actually have to be changed on the Blackbaud side. If they're not in gray, that means you can actually change them on the Turnitin side. You'll be able to change them here. Please note that you can now see all the students enrolled in your course in the inbox. This means you can tell who has submitted, who has not, who has submitted late. It also means you can submit on behalf of a student if needed. And there's also access to assignment analytics. Just like you had with LTI 1.1, you'll have that with LTI 1.3. And, Stephanie, I'll actually chat through this particular page, because this is an update that we at Blackbaud are making to the evaluation screen that teachers utilize while grading assignments. What you're seeing here is a prototype, but we are going to be updating the user experience, for both creating assignments and grading assignments, and that does include LTI grading. So with Turnitin, for example, if you are accustomed to the 1.1 integration, you may have noticed that every time that you click on a student name on the left hand side, it loads the full Turnitin UX, where you can access and grade any student's information, even the ones that you are not actively looking at. With this particular update, we're gonna be adding in an option to for teachers to click on the LTI name in the drop down. That way they can have more screen real estate, while they are grading student work. So they'll still be able to go in and grade individual students, but when they want to grade or look at all of the class submissions, that happened, they'll have a bespoke option in the student selector on the top right hand corner that will allow them to launch the tool in the Blackbaud LMS and have a lot more screen real estate than what they had in the past. So this should help alleviate some of the confusion as well that we saw, when teachers were trying to grade assignments, utilizing the 1.1 integration. Alright. Are there any questions on the faculty workflow before we go on? Ben, go ahead. I see one. So, yeah, this came from Ben. Can the teacher set the assignment type when creating the assignment in Turnitin, or do they have to create and save the assignment first and then edit? So as of right now, they would have to create the assignment first and then edit. However, one of the other enhancements that we're planning on making is before the assignment saves, we'll be launching it in the Blackbaud UX. That way, the teacher can make any quick edits that they need to, should they need or want. So, more to come on that in the future, but for the time being, the answer is yes. They would need to, create the assignment first and then edit into it. Looks like we have one other question that came in, that I Terrably sorry. I seem to be having some issues with speakers. Oh, okay. No worries, Stephanie. I can take over. There is one other question that came in that has to do with whether or not teachers, can create an assignment in Blackbaud. So for that question, teachers can absolutely still create assignments in Blackbaud. Just when they launch the assignment grader session model so what I'm gonna do is continue on with the student workflow. For the students, believe it or not, nothing has actually changed for them. They still see the instructions, the rubric, and the details of the assignment, and they still submit in the exact same way just by clicking on upload submission. And they will be able to see the grade, the feedback, and the report if you've enabled that as well. So nothing changes for the student side. Are there any questions on, if are are there any questions about the student experience? No. I don't see any questions about the student experience, so I think we're okay to move to upcoming enhancements. If you will give me just a moment. I'm trying to deduce my speaker. Choose. Okay. I can hear both of us. Excellent. Okay. Let's move on to enhancements then. So, by the way, enhancements and the next generation of of so the upcoming Turnitin enhancements includes things like the assignment copy tool to copy old Turnitin assignments from wherever you have them into your Blackbaud course, converting them to LTI 1.3 assignments or converting them into the next generation of feedback studio assignments, and, of course, both changing all date fields and names as needed. The submission management tool, which is coming out in fall twenty twenty five, is there to help make paper deletion requests, easier to do and is also a searchable tool so that you can download reports from previous submissions without going into the course itself. Access to additional add ons, such as paper to digital, which is designed for handwritten work, Clarity, which is designed to provide transparency in the student writing process, and the next generation of feedback studio will also be an enhancement you can have with LTI 1.3. And by the way, the enhancements, to the next generation of Feedback Studio include, if in case you wanna take a look at that turn it in roadmap for new products, but it'll include access to features such as AI indicators and the submission list, group work, and multipart assignments. We're also making improvements on our grading and feedback tools, such as having automatic, feedback summarization via AI and audio video summary feedback, and all accessibility improvements will also be made through our next generation of feedback studio. So if you do wanna check out that turn in roadmap for new products, please feel free to do so. Awesome. Thank you, Stephanie. And, really quickly, I also wanna do a plug. As you may have noticed that if you're following along those steps, you cannot currently select LTI 1.3 from the integration settings. That is because we're in an early adopter program, so this feature is not quite, ready for general general availability. With that said, if you are interested in joining the EAP program, feel free to use that QR code, to fill out an interest form. This is what we call an open EAP. So we are taking anyone and anyone that would like to participate. If that QR code is not working for you for whatever reason, in the chat, I've also gone ahead and submitted a direct link, to that form. So, again, if you're interested in joining the EAP, by all means, feel free to log a response on that form, and I will be happy to reach out to you, and chat you through the EAP process in a little bit more detail. So more to come on an actual general availability release for this feature. As of right now, we are scheduling it for September. So I can't give a specific date, but we are looking at the September window. So more information to come. We will have things such as blogs and email blasts that go out once this feature is ready for, general availability. So be on the lookout for those, if you will not be participating in the 1.3, early adopter program. Okay. Finally, I wanna take a look at some resources. But I saw a couple of questions come in, so I just wanna answer those really quickly. So it looks like we have one person asking, that they have the ability to select a 1.3 integration. That is more than likely because you may not be selecting Turnitin from the provider drop down. So with the Turnitin integration, it's really important that the turn it into the election is made in the provider drop down. Otherwise, you will not quite get the connection that you need. I have a question here that says, if we set up 1.3 but wanna roll back to 1.1, is that possible? The answer is yes. For the time being, that is possible. And then there was one other question pertaining to teachers and their workflow, asking, is it true that teachers will no longer create assignments in Blackbaud? That is not true. Teachers will still go into the learning management system within Blackbaud. Just when they go to create an assignment that utilizes the Turnitin 1.3 integration, instead of clicking add assignment, they will click add Turnitin, and that will launch the Turnitin UX, all happening within the Blackbaud LMS. And then once the teacher submits that assignment using the Turnitin UX, that will then create the assignment line item in Blackbaud. So they're not having to log in to Turnitin separately or anything like that. All of that is managed and housed within the Blackbaud in there or the blackboard, LMS. Alrighty. So a couple of resources here for us. We have the turn it in, upgrade hub. So this is one of the items that is in the docs, menu item on the right hand side for you all. So if you want to, take a look at that, that resource is there to help you upgrade from 1.1 to 1.3 once this does go into general availability or if you do participate in our early adopter program. And like I mentioned, we'll also have some blogs coming, that outline all of this information as well as a recording of this webinar. That way, you can access it later should you ever need to or want to. Now we've been answering questions, throughout the entire presentation, so I think we've gotten to everybody. But if anything does pop up, by all means, feel free to reach out to either myself or Stephanie. We would be more than happy to help answer whatever questions you may have. Now I do have a couple of small plugs that I wanna make before we hop off, from today's webinar. The first of which, is just a reminder, Black or BBCON, twenty twenty five is happening October 6 through the eighth. Our keynote speaker, Adam Grant, we're all very, very excited to hear from him. Me, personally, I am a huge work life fan and a huge fan of Adam Grant. So I am personally very excited for this. But hopefully, some of you are as well. And, again, if you wanna register, for a b b con, feel free to go to bdconference.com, to put in that registration. And, again, that's happening October 6 through the eighth. And one other plug, this one, really is, near and dear to the hearts of us in the k twelve vertical. We are bringing back the k twelve user conference. This will be back in July. We don't have exact dates sussed out just yet, but more details are coming. And again, that will be in Boston. So we are very, very excited, to bring this back. It's been a while since we've had a k twelve user conference. So we're very excited to get this back into, the schedule and meet up with all of you in person. So, be on the lookout for more information as we get closer to July 2026. Alrighty. Well, with that, thank you everybody. Thank you again for, coming and participating, and hearing and learning about the new LTI 1.3 Turnitin integration that we have, coming in the very near future. And, hopefully, I see some of you in the early adopter program in the near future. So with that, have a lovely rest of your day, and thanks again for coming. Bye, everyone.
